Dress the Bed for Sophistication and Elegance

Dressing the bed is just as important to the style of the bedroom as the furnishings, accessories, and artwork. A bedroom should feel relaxing and serene; when you ‘dress the bed’ stick with neutral colors for a muted color palate and mix muted tones with a pop of color as you ‘dress the bed’ for an elegant and sophisticated design concept. Remember bedding is as important as the art hanging on the walls.

Today’s trend in bedding is neutral fabrics with a sheen or satin texture. Less vibrant colors are in for 2014 and neutral bedding paired with colorful patterns, geometric lines and interesting textures add a dimensional design to you bedroom. Add interesting and eye-catching throw pillows on your bed for a comfortable yet sophisticated look. Do not overdo it on the pillows, as men tend to complain about a mountain of pillows that serve no purpose but to be tossed aside before bed. Today’s trend calls for few pillows on the bed, often just two Euro pillows add a clean sense of comfort and sophistication. Depending on your preference in bedding, whether duvet or bedspread, the Euro pillows should complement the bed covering.

Don’t be afraid to add an embellished pillow or two, but stay away from ruffles and fringes as it can appear too feminine or too young, taking away from the elegance and serenity a bedroom should have. Opt for hand-painted silk pillows for an exquisite design. Rhinestones and embellished pillows are an exciting avenue to take if you want to add “bling” to your bedding.

Coordinate bedding with the lamps, draperies, artwork and the rug in your bedroom. Tying neutral colors together is easy, but steer clear of flat textures as that can make a room appear bland and uninviting. Make your bedroom serene and elegant so when you walk in, you feel instantly relaxed. Choose a rug with a pattern if your bedding is neutral and lacks texture. Stick with less dense patterns to add dimension to the floor to make the room appear larger.

As always, design choices are personal. Your taste in color, texture and pattern stems from your personality, and the feeling you want your bedroom to emanate for anyone who views it or steps foot inside. Some prefer a softer comforter that is fluffy and offers a messier look. Others prefer a duvet or a bedspread for a more polished look. When designing a bedroom with your man in mind, stick with neutral bedding of course, and choose textures that have straight lines and geometric patterns. Stay away from pinks and floral patterns as this choice might throw him for a loop.

2014 Color of The Year: Radiant Orchid

The designation of the color of the year is always exciting, but one must be careful, as it may not have a lot of longevity. 2014′s Color of the year is bright and playful embracing both cool and warm undertones; a fusion of pink, purple and fuchsia this beautiful color is found in nature. The true beauty of 2014′s color of the year is its versatility in any room of the home.

It coordinates with this year’s new neutral–gray, and makes for a perfect accent color whether its an accessory for an occasional table or a brand new rug that will really make a statement this year.

While it’s a beautiful color, for many it is a color that may be enjoyable for only a year or less. Introduce orchid in small ways to any room in your home, and you will brighten up the space with a pop of color. Be carful when pairing it with other bold colors as it works best with neutral shades. A great way to introduce color is with decorative pillows or accent chairs. Orchid is beautiful with creams and tans and of course it’s fabulous with the new neutral—gray. If your living room luxury furniture is a neutral palette consider adding orchid sofa pillows or upholster a small accent chair with a radiant striped orchid pattern to add an eye-catching contrast.

Mix and Match Contemporary Patterns and Textures

Create a space that is undeniably polished and professional with some foolproof guidelines to mixing and matching patterns and texture all while playing with color. Make your friends wish they called your interior designer as you keep the secret to your beautiful living or dining room as none other than a little bit of knowledge on mixing patterns and textures the right way. Texture is the feel of fabric while patterns are the designs printed onto fabric. Mix pattern and texture to create a visually engaging space.Patterns:Textures2

Pay attention to color. Create harmony and choose colors that compliment one another or color opposites such as purple and orange or blue and yellow for a themed color map that is visually interesting. Do not be afraid to mix patterns and textures, but remember to abide by color theory when doing so. If you have a larger room you will want to use a pattern that appears large but takes up less space visually. Big stripes or circles, larger floral patterns work really well in pulling a large room together for a cozier feeling. Small rooms need dense patterns and dark backgrounds to make the room appear larger.

If you are featuring a stripe-patterned armchair, add a solid bold color to either contrast or compliment the stripe. Compliment the stripe by choosing a decorative pillow the same color as one of the stripes or if your striped pattern is black and white choose a bright color for a fun and playful aesthetic. Geometric patterns bring a simple aesthetic to a room, but contrast well with bold colors and floral. Organic patterns are a good choice for kitchen back splashes as colors are often muted and textures are unique to where less is definitely more. Mix textures like linen combined with nubby chenille for a great contrast. Animal print is a great way to introduce a fun and wild design idea. Do not overdo it as a little goes a long way. Be minimalistic with animal print as it is bold and unforgiving as rooms can drown in too much animal print.

Playing with texture and pattern can change how you feel when you step into a room. Add wood wall art to make a room feel warm, or a glass coffee table for a cleaner and “cooler” aesthetic. We associate different aesthetic elements with different textures to produce a certain look or feel like velvet chairs feel luxurious and plush versus plastic chairs, which feel minimalistic and stiff. Remember to incorporate the floor. If you have an area rug with intricate designs or a patterned granite floor keep the patterns and textures of furniture and accessories simple.

Create Outdoor Spaces With Indoor Luxury

We are so fortunate to live in such a wonderful climate so we can implement the latest trends in outdoor living. Following the outdoor space trend we’re seeing extensions of indoors/interiors. Spaces such as outdoor kitchens, dining areas, and entertainment sitting areas equipped with every comfort and luxury of interior spaces are replicated outdoors. Decide the focal point of the space, and how you want to separate the outdoor area from the interior. Retractable glass doors are best in creating the indoor/outdoor feel. Easy entrance to the indoor creates a good flow of movement between the two spaces and gives the allusion the spaces are one in the same.

Start designing your outdoor space with what is already available to you. Decide how and what you will use the outdoor space for, and how many people you envision in your outdoor space at once. An outdoor space can be used for events, personal leisure or entertainment, and provides an alternative to entertaining inside your home. If your backyard has an existing patio you’re one step ahead of the game as you will not have to build the physical space. Measure the area to get a better idea of what you can do with the space. Limited space calls for more intimate seating while larger spaces can be split up by higher chairs and a bar for entertaining or a fire pit can act as a focal point within the space.

Accessorizing outdoor areas can be a fun way to develop your design aesthetic from interior inspirations. Comfortable pillows with lush fabrics, embellished lamps, candles of various heights (keep candles out of the hot sun during Arizona summers), wall art or vases can add dimension and pops of color to your outdoor space.OutdoorSpace1

Seating is very important in an outdoor space. Ask yourself how many people will be using the space, and what the focal point will be to arrange the seating around it. If you like to watch sports, but aren’t big on cooking, install a television and arrange the seating around it. Continue the aesthetic from inside your home with the same textures and fabrics. As far as furnishings are concerned, beautiful fabrics seen indoors, even velvets and chenille, are making outdoors spaces more posh than ever before. Outdoor rugs are a must to give the area a cohesive feel and don’t forget about fabulous lamps and chandeliers. Keeping the outdoor area well lit, but intimate and cohesive with your interior design elements will continue the flow and aesthetic of your interior design concepts.

Visit La Maison Interiors for luxury furniture ideas and make your outdoor space unforgettable. The outdoor becomes the indoor when simple interior design ideas are implemented in beautiful outdoor spaces.
